Barber Vintage Motorcycle Festival October 8-10, 2010
This year was the sixth annual Barber vintage motorcycle festival, and I am kicking myself for not having gone to the last five. This festival is a celebration of all vintage motorcycles and the motorcycle enthusiast. The festival includes one of the largest motorcycle swap meets east of the Mississippi river. You’re more than likely to find those parts for your project that have been eluding you, and get them at a reasonable price. Other features of the event are, vintage motorcycle racing, if it’s old their racing it, on road, motocross, cross country, and even trials. There is also daily air shows, a motorcycle auction and vintage demos from various bike clubs.
Not to mention, I was blown away upon entering the Barber Motorsports Park where the event takes place. This place is like Disney World for motorcycle enthusiast. The landscaping is immaculate, there are sculptures throughout the park, the on road course is an amazing track, and there are all kinds of places for spectators to watch whatever type of race they’re into. The pit areas were all access, clean and well organized, there is no amenity left out at this motorsports park.
One of the most spectacular attractions on this motorsports Garden of Eden is the Barber Motorsports Museum, which is home to one of the largest vintage and modern motorcycle collections in the world. I am not going to ramble about the bikes, or the architecture and the size of the building, or the detailed displays, or the view of the track from the fifth floor of the museum, just go and see for yourself.
I spent three days at this festival from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and it was not long enough. The people at Barber's go above and beyond to help and accommodate your visit, i.e. continuous trams transporting guest from one section to another, friendly and knowledgeable employees, and well marked, prominent signage directing guest to their needs. Some of the things that I didn't get around to doing were seeing the weekend guest, John Surtees speak. I guess I was just beside myself drooling all over the place looking at motorcycles, deciding which parts to buy, and watching races. One cool aspect of the weekend was checking out all of the bikes people rode to the show. That was a show in itself. There is more, I could go on forever but I'll leave some as a surprise. I really enjoyed the weekend and being around so many nice people that were into motorcycles was a real treat. Check it out next year, October 7, 8, & 9 2011.
